Closet Built-Ins — Wall-to-Wall Without the Gaps
A closet built-in is a series of narrow cabinets joined by shared panels. Every internal width depends on the number of dividers and the exact thickness of each one — the calculator handles the compounding math.
Design decisions the calculator supports
- Number of vertical dividers (each one steals its thickness from usable width)
- Real measured plywood thickness (Baltic birch runs thinner than nominal)
- Scribe filler strips at each end wall — usually 1"–1-1/2" wide, planed to fit
- Hanger rod height and shelf height per bay
Formula for usable bay width
Usable bay width = (wall-to-wall width − 2 × filler − (dividers + 1) × thickness) / (dividers + 1). Off by one on the thickness and every bay is wrong.
