Bookcase Plans — Every Shelf Fits the First Time

Bookcases live and die by shelf length. A 1/16" miscalculation across a 36-inch case means the top rail won't sit down or the shelf falls out of its dado. The calculator handles every derived length so you can cut with confidence.

Basic 3-shelf bookcase cut list

  • Sides — 2, full height × depth
  • Top — inner width × depth
  • Bottom — inner width × depth
  • Fixed shelves — inner width × (depth − 1/2")
  • Back panel — 1/4" ply, rabbeted, (width − 1/4") × (height − 1/4")
  • Toe kick / plinth — optional, recessed 2–3"

Fixed dado vs adjustable pin shelves

Dado joints demand exact shelf thickness because the shelf must slide into the groove with zero slop. Adjustable pin shelves get an intentional 1/16" clearance so they lift out cleanly — the calculator applies this automatically.
