Nominal vs Actual Plywood Thickness (and Why 3/4" Isn't 3/4")
If you built cabinets assuming a "3/4-inch" sheet is actually 3/4 of an inch, you already know how this ends. Nominal thickness is a label, not a measurement. Here's what the real numbers are and how to design around them.
The short version
Domestic 3/4" plywood almost always measures around 0.703" (23/32"). Imported 18 mm plywood measures 0.708". Baltic birch is often true 18 mm or slightly under. And no two sheets are guaranteed to be identical — even from the same stack.

Why plywood is undersized
Plywood is sanded after lamination. Each sanding pass removes a few thousandths of an inch, and the industry standardized around "nominal minus 1/32" for domestic sheet goods decades ago. The label stuck. The material didn't.
European (metric) plywood is manufactured to a true metric spec, so 18 mm is genuinely 18 mm. That's why swapping domestic 3/4" for imported 18 mm ply mid- project breaks every dado: 18 mm is 0.708", but 3/4" ply is 0.703". Five thousandths of an inch in a snug dado is the difference between "press fit" and "won't seat."
What this does to your cabinet math
A 48"-wide cabinet with two side panels:
- Assuming nominal 0.75": inner shelf = 48 − 1.5 = 46.500"
- Using real 0.703": inner shelf = 48 − 1.406 = 46.594"
That's 3/32" per cabinet. Line up four cabinets in a run and you're 3/8" off — enough to blow out a face-frame reveal or ruin an inset door.
The two rules
- Measure every batch of material with calipers before cutting. Don't trust the label, don't trust last week's measurement.
- Feed the real number into your cut list. A calculator that takes a caliper reading and updates every part length instantly is worth more than any jig you own.
