The Complete Guide to Using a Cabinet Cut List Calculator
A cabinet cut list calculator turns an outer dimension — say 48 inches wide — into a set of parts that actually assemble to 48 inches. It sounds trivial. It isn't. Here's what a good one has to solve, and how to use one without getting burned.
What a cut list calculator actually does
You tell it three things: the outer dimensions of the cabinet, the real measured thickness of your material, and your saw's kerf. It gives you back a table of parts — length, width, quantity — that assemble to those exact outer dimensions.
The trick is that the "real measured thickness" is almost never the nominal thickness. 3/4-inch plywood is usually 0.703". 18 mm plywood is 0.708". If you cut your shelves assuming 0.75" sides, your 48-inch cabinet will end up 47.906" wide — and your face frame won't line up.
The core formula: inner width
The inner shelf/back/stretcher length for a butt-joined carcass is:
inner_length = outer_width − (2 × side_thickness)For a rabbeted or dadoed carcass where the shelves let into the sides, the formula changes:
inner_length = outer_width − (2 × side_thickness) + (2 × dado_depth)A dado is typically half the material thickness deep — so for 0.703" ply with a 3/8" dado, the shelves are 0.75" longer than a butt-jointed version. That's the difference between a rattling shelf and a snug one.
Worked example: 48" wide storage cabinet
- Outer width: 48"
- Measured side thickness: 0.703" (real 3/4" ply)
- Joinery: butt joints
Inner length = 48 − (2 × 0.703) = 46.594", or roughly 46 19/32". If you'd used the nominal 0.75" you'd cut 46.500" — a full 3/32" short. Across a run of cabinets that gap becomes a face-frame nightmare.
Where kerf enters the picture
A calculator doesn't remove kerf from a single part — it accounts for kerf when you're breaking down a sheet. Every rip cut removes ~1/8" of material. If you pack four 12" strips into a 48" sheet without leaving kerf, only the first strip is 12". The rest shrink. See our saw kerf guide for the full breakdown.
Back panels: the part everyone forgets
A 1/4" back that sits in a rabbet needs a different length than the shelves. If your rabbet is 3/8" wide on each side, the back is:

How to actually use one
- Measure your material with calipers. Don't trust the label.
- Enter the outer H × W × D you want.
- Pick your joinery (butt, dado, rabbet). Most tools default to butt.
- Set kerf to your actual blade — 0.125" for a full-kerf 10" table saw, 0.094" for thin-kerf.
- Cut the biggest parts first so any accumulated error lives in the smallest offcut.
